The Ophthalmic Diagnostics Equipment Market Is Driven by the Increasing Prevalence of Eye Disorders Worldwide

Ophthalmic diagnostic equipment are used to diagnose ocular deficiencies and deformities of eyes such as distorted vision, haloes, cataract, retinal disease, glaucoma, eyelid abnormalities, and refractive errors. Tonometer, specular microscopes, ophthalmoscopes, fundus cameras, visual field analyzers, and retinoscopes are some most commonly used ophthalmic diagnostic equipment. Increasing prevalence of eye disorders and vision loss have led to the introduction of new technologies, which is expected to accelerate the growth of the ophthalmic diagnostics equipment market. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), by 2050, around 7.32 billion people in the United States will have primary open angle glaucoma.

Thus, with the increasing prevalence of eye diseases, such as glaucoma and cataract, demand for ophthalmic diagnostics equipment is also increasing. For example, in May 2020, Bausch + Lomb announced the European launch of Extended Depth of Focus intraocular lens (IOL), LuxSmart, and a new monofocal IOL, LuxGood. Both feature preloaded delivery systems and Pure Refractive Optics (PRO) Technology. This in turn is also expected to augment the growth of the ophthalmic diagnostics equipment market. Moreover, the increasing prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and increasing awareness among people about AMD (one of the leading causes of vision loss adults) is driving the market growth.

For example, in February 2021, during AMD Awareness Month, Bausch + Lomb and Prevent Blindness collaborated to raise awareness of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults 50 years of age and older. This in turn is expected to propel the ophthalmic diagnostics equipment market growth. Moreover, the growth of the market can be attributed to the growing geriatric population around the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), by 2050, geriatric population is expected to reach 2 billion, up from 900 million in 2015.

Over the years, the field of diagnostic procedures has advanced rapidly. Methods including flow cytometry, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and other advanced methods introduced in the field of medicine have been adopted by ophthalmologists for use in diagnostic procedures. As a result, there is an increasing demand for ophthalmic diagnostics equipment in healthcare settings. However, the high cost of swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) is expected to hamper the growth of the ophthalmic diagnostics equipment market. The prices of such equipment can be as low as US$ 8000 or less, whereas the newest, high-tier systems may cost as much as US$ 70000.
